About the artist
Laura M. Oliphant is a sculptor and restoration artist.
She specializes in restoring historic structures and has worked on notable projects such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Josephine Butler Parks Center, and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Her expertise spans various mediums, including marble, stone, bronze, metal, and wood.
Laura is the daughter of Pat Oliphant and Hendrika DeVries. Pat Oliphant is a renowned political cartoonist known for his sharp commentary and distinctive style. He moved to the United States in with his wife, Hendrika DeVries, and their two children. Throughout his career, Pat received numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1967.
Hendrika DeVries is an author and therapist. She published a memoir titled “When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew,” reflecting on her experiences in Amsterdam during WWII.
Laura’s upbringing in a creative environment, influenced by her parents’ artistic and professional endeavors, played a significant role in shaping her career in the arts. She pursued formal education in fine arts, studying at institutions such as The Corcoran and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her dedication to craftsmanship and preservation is evident in her restoration work, where she emphasizes maintaining the original aesthetic while incorporating modern techniques.
